Iranun Cluster Municipalities
The Iranun Cluster Municipalities is composed of four (4) adjacent municipalities from the original Iranun Development Council that is made up of 5 that includes the municipality of Datu Blah Sinsuat. For the I4J project, the Iranun Cluster is composed of Parang, Barira, Buldon and Matanog municipalities in the province of Maguindanao. These municipalities are from the First district of the province that is dominated by the Iranuns, a distinct ethnic group around the Illana Bay. The cluster is composed of mostly depressed municipalities with the exception of Parang, which is a first class municipality. Parang is currently led by Hon. Mayor Ibrahim Ibay. Barira, Buldon and Matanog are all fourth class municipalities. Barira is currently headed by Hon. Mayor Abdulradzak Tomawis, Buldon has Hon. Tata Tomawis as Mayor while Hon. Mohammad-Ali Guro is the Mayor of Matanog. All of the four towns were was to be part of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) created province of Shariff Kabunsuan, whose existence was nullified by the Supreme Court in July 2008.
Consistent with the disparity between the four municipalities, there’s not much industry present in the area except for Parang. The clustered municipalities rely mainly on agriculture for livelihood, producing coconut, palay, banana, root crops and various tropical fruits like banana, durian, lansones, marang and mango. There are many potential industries in the area however if given the right push of good leadership and investment. The area of the clustered municipalities is a good mix of mountains in Barira, Buldon and Matanog, while Parang is next to a good harbor of Polloc where a port is located. This geography provides a diversity of possible industries of tourism and an intensified agriculture industry that could branch out to merchandising and food processing.
